Westonbirt School enjoys an enviable reputation for producing highly successful individual and team performances in a wide variety of sports. A range of different Physical Education activities are offered to from Years 7 to 9 in accordance with the National Curriculum.
The school's major competitive sports are lacrosse, rugby, netball, swimming, tennis, athletics and cricket. In addition, the school boasts an impressive equestrian team. Fixtures are played throughout the academic year against other independent and local schools and many students compete at county, regional, national and international level. Most recent successes have been seen in representation at the England Under 17 Academy for Lacrosse.
Year 10 pupils can choose to take Physical Education as a GCSE; furthering their knowledge of the function of the body in activity and the development of sport. At Westonbirt, we strongly embrace the ethos of peer support and encourage older members of the teams to support younger ones to develop their skills in the sporting arena. The GCSE is the perfect platform for this and currently many of our students assist in teaching the Prep School physical education and swimming sessions. Passion for this subject can then be extended through to BTEC Sport at Year 12 or continued involvement in a wide range of clubs, or simply exercise in our astounding parkland.
The school's grounds provide the perfect platform for sporting excellence with 210 acres of beautiful countryside incorporating a nine-hole golf course, lacrosse, hockey, football and rugby pitches as well as netball and tennis courts. Our aim is to inspire and challenge pupils to follow a broad, coherent, satisfying and worthwhile course of study whilst developing an awareness and appreciation of physical activity and how it can lead to a healthy and active lifestyle in the future.
